Spring is finally here—and for RVers, that means it’s time to wake your home-on-wheels from its winter slumber and get it ready for a new season of adventure. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or heading out for long-haul trips, doing the right prep now will help you avoid problems down the road (literally).
Here’s your comprehensive spring checklist—plus a few expert tips to keep your RV safe, clean, and road-ready.
✅ Spring RV Readiness Checklist
🔧 1. De-Winterize Your RV Water System
- Reconnect and flush your fresh water system
- Sanitize your freshwater tank
- Reinstall water filters
- Check for leaks throughout plumbing
🔋 2. Reconnect & Test the Batteries
- Charge batteries fully before reconnecting
- Clean terminals and check water levels
- Test with a multimeter for proper voltage
3. Inspect Tires
- Check tire pressure (including the spare)
- Look for cracking, flat spots, or tread separation
- Tighten lug nuts to manufacturer specs
🧯 4. Safety Checks
- Test smoke, CO, and propane detectors
- Inspect fire extinguishers
- Check first aid kit and emergency supplies
💡 5. Test Appliances & Electrical
- Run fridge, furnace, A/C, and water heater
- Test all interior and exterior lights
- Make sure outlets and switches work properly
🧽 6. Clean & Inspect Roof Seals
This is one step many RVers forget—but it’s one of the most important.
Clean your roof seals using a gentle cleaner designed for RV use, which will allow you to spot voids in the sealant a lot easier. Once cleaned, carefully inspect all sealant lines. Look for cracks, gaps, or areas where the sealant has pulled away from the surface. Over time, sun exposure causes seals to dry out, shrink, and crack, leaving your RV vulnerable to leaks.
We recommend inspecting your roof seals:
• Every spring (before the season begins)
• Every fall (when prepping for storage)
• During the season, especially after extreme heat or storms
Many RV owner’s manuals recommend checking roof seals every 3 months—and we agree. Prevention now can save you costly repairs later.
✅ Want to Be Sure? Try Our Leak Tech Pressure Test
At Outdoor Travel, we use a specialized Leak Tech machine to check for potential air and water leaks. Here’s how it works:
- A small fan pressurizes your RV interior using just 1.5 lbs of pressure
- We then spray a soapy solution on the outside
- Wherever bubbles form, we investigate further and reseal if needed
🧼 Cost: $339 + tax
Resealing (if needed) is extra and quoted based on findings.
Important note: This test is an excellent way to detect areas of concern, but it’s not a guarantee that leaks won’t occur in the future. That said, it’s one of the most effective tools we have to prevent surprises before your trip.
🔥 Don’t Forget: Propane Safety Test
Before you fire up that BBQ or propane furnace, it’s important to ensure your propane system is in top shape.
We recommend having a manometer propane test done each spring by a certified RV propane technician to:
- Test for propane leaks
- Ensure the correct pressure is reaching your appliances
- Confirm that propane appliances are running safely and efficiently
💰 Cost: For only $169 + tax, this small check provides big peace of mind, especially when traveling with family.
